Reinforced concrete continues to be used as the most common construction material in structures. In most instances, concrete have a natural tendency to shrink as it cures and harden. When the shrinkage of the concrete exceeds the tensile capacity, cracks form. Cracks in concrete can also occur due to other reasons related to workmanship and design. Concrete is also liable to crack in both the plastic and hardened states due to stresses which it intrinsically (naturally) sustains by the nature of its constituent materials. This course looks primarily at this kind of cracks.[break][break]Based on site, Resident Engineers (REs) and Resident Technical Officers (RTOs) are often faced with issues of cracks in concrete as the structure is constructed. This course is primarily designed for them to equip them with technical knowledge on the causes, prevention, inspection and rectification of cracks. Emphasis on the inspection methodology will benefit the participants on what to do when cracks are detected. Accordingly, the appropriate repair method should be considered when the reason and nature of cracks are determined.[break]

The course will covers the principle and advantages/ limitations of each welding and cutting process[break][break]It is essential that the Resident Engineer (RE) and Resident Technical Officer (RTO) who are involved in construction should be familiarise with different welding and cutting processes available to the fabricators. Increasingly, more fabricators are seeking to adopt innovative welding technology to enhance efficiency and productivity. Participants will be briefed on some upcoming welding technology which may be used in the Prefabricated Pre-Volumetric Construction[break][break]Part 2: Safe Entry & Work in Confined Spaces[break]Objective:[break]Confined space work is one of the most serious of all workplace hazards but is also one that is often under-estimated. The unfortunate reality is that many stakeholders and workers do not fully understand the hazards and the risks that are “hidden” in confined spaces until actual entry and work needs to be performed in them. The objective of this module is to inculcate and raise awareness in participants (especially Resident Engineers, Resident Technical Officers and Resident Architects) on the hazards of confined space entry and work that are present in construction sites. This will enable them to understand the control measures that are implemented onsite to mitigate confined space hazards. Their perspectives will be enhanced through the sharing of legal and other requirements on confined space entry and work as well as accident case studies.[break]

PV systems convert sunlight directly to electricity. It allows a building to save electricity costs from SP PowerGrid and stand out from the crowd, by enhancing its environmental and high-tech appeal. Just a few years ago, PV projects required additional incentive to make them commercially viable. But costs have declined such that projects achieves payback periods below 10 years, yielding attractive internal rates of return (IRR) of 8–12%. This applies to systems that perform properly for 20–25 years, in line with PV module power warranties.[break][break]Many aspiring PV systems owners find themselves poorly prepared when requesting system proposals and evaluating offers, it might be difficult to distinguish a good system from a mediocre one. Hence, we have invited an experienced PV industry professional to clear your doubts.[break][break]At the end of the programme, participants will:[break]a) Understand the possibilities and limitations of solar PV on buildings[break]b) Understand the economics and payback of PV systems[break]c) Be familiar with the incentive schemes for PV[break]d) Be familiar with the incentive schemes for PV systems[break]e) Understand how to specify and evaluate PV project proposal[break][break]
